On my iPhone, I have Notifiation center set to show banners. When I get a notification, a banner appears at the top of my screen. The banner stays for too long. Seems like every time one of these pops up, I need access to the area it is covering. But I have to wait for the banner to hide.

Have you tried going to Settings>Notifications><app name>>Banner Style and making sure it's set to "temporary". The other option is "persistent." Banners set to "persistent" hang around much longer. I think they eventually go away but usually I dismiss them manually.

The banner is displayed for a determined amount of time that cannot be changed. You can always flick the notification upwards to dismiss it.
