I work remotely and would like to connect my work laptop (Dell) to my desktop imac monitor so I can use 2 screens (the laptop and the imac monitor). I can see I have a 2 thunderbolt ports on my monitor - can these be used?

Impossible. iMacs are computers, they are NOT external displays for other devices.
Your best bet is if the Dell needs an external monitor to simply buy one, why:

It is possible I am misreading what you own, there is no such thing as a Mac Monitor. Please research what you have and let us know the correct model name just in case I mistook that you have an iMac (you posted in a iMac forum) and not something else.
