Apps don’t work after updating to iOS 18.1.1

I updated my iOS to 18.1.1 on my iPhone pro max 16 last night and this morning I’d say about 80% of my apps refuse to open. Reinstalling doesn’t seem to solve the issue. Causing me major issues as I can’t open my banking apps to verify transactions. Can anyone tell me how to roll back my iOS update or if there is a fix?

I found a way to open the apps. It was still a big pain.... I went into the App Store app. I then clicked on my profile at the top of the app. I updated any apps that needed updating, and then opened every app one by one from the App Store app. I had to find and re-enter some of my passwords, but I believe everything is working now. The biggest headache was getting my password manager app working to allow me to get to the passwords.

Something that came to mind after reading all the existing problems with the update iOS18.1.1:

I added a link here but it was removed (possibly because of copyrights) so here is the text instead:

I googled on the reason for the update and it was mentioned in the top search result at google that it was issued because of 2 actively abused security issues. the first is related to mac's on intel so I will spare you the details,

The second issue patched in iOS 18.1.1, tracked as CVE-2024-44309, is a

flaw in WebKit, the engine that underpins Apple’s Safari browser. If

exploited, a user could fall victim to a cross-site scripting attack,

which sees an attacker inject malicious code into a trusted website or

application.

It might be related to your phone being semi-bricked by this update, maybe you were already infected with malware due to an actively misused (zero day?) bug, the whole reason for this update.

So basically wiping the phone and reinstalling everything from the cloud, might be the safest way to go unless the malware is in the backup as well.

Just my 2 cents of today.

SMS is a cellular service and doesn’t involve Apple. The fact they work on WiFi narrows your issues to your cellular provider.

Cellular providers use their own software and firmware. From Apple’s end the only fix is to try resetting network settings. Let’s try that and if it doesn’t work, you’ll have isolated the issue to your cellular provider.

Reset your network settings

If you're using iOS or iPadOS 15 or later, tap Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [Device] > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

If you're using iOS or iPadOS 14 or earlier, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

This also resets Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN and APN settings that you've used before.

And it appears none of these apps are Apple apps. If 3rd party apps aren't updated appropriately by their App Developers for iOS 18, which Apple sent them the Application Protocol Interface long before iOS 18 was rolled out, that's on the App Developer, not Apple. Apple has NO control over 3rd party apps. They don't own them. They can't touch the code in them. They can't fix any issue with them.

For these apps, you need to contact the app developers of these apps and complain to them.

This just means the app developers aren't doing their jobs and haven't ensured their games work on iOS 18.x.x. Apple has no control over 3rd party apps. They don't own them. They can't the code in them. The App Developers have to fix their apps. Frustrating, I know. But not something within Apple's control. They simply "host" the app in the App Store. Nothing more.

Seriously?!?! Because Apple couldn't manage to accurately detail an update, I have to delete my apps and reload them? Bogus!

The original poster's issue was probably a VPN, not any Apple updates.

Apple makes their iOS updates available to developers months before they are released so that they can test their apps. But Apple cannot force them to update them.

Ditto. Fox sports app opens and shuts. Have updated it. Have deleted and reinstalled it. Have shut down iPad and restarted. All result of IOS 18.1.1. Awful timing. Missing everything. Com’on man! Read all this blog for fixes. Missing out on even more. Nothing.

It it's a specific app, like Fox Sports, it means the app developer hasn't updated their app correctly for iOS 18.1.1. What did Fox say when you brought this to their attention? Apple doesn't own Fox, nor their app, so they have no way to update it for a new iOS version. But Fox was given the Application Protocol Interface (API) from Apple before they released the update. What Fox may or may not have done with it, is out of Apple's control.

As I look at it and have mentioned before, backup to the cloud if you can, wipe your phone / reset to factory settings and reinstall everything to eliminate any possible malware on the phone, which might cause the apps to fail. A lot of work but the safest way to go in my opinion.. (but who am I ;)

Then again, I am no Apple employee and certainly not a programmer or code writer so do not take my word for it that it will work. You might want to wait for Apple to answer, although it has been a week now...

It’s not an AT&T issue. Personally, I’d call the bank back and hope to get a more understanding support person. An alternative is to stop in a bank branch and ask for help. That’s what the bank is there for, to help their customers.

The bank hasn’t updated their app in a month. That coincides with the start of your issue. I suspect their update caused your issue, but let them try to help you.

My Carrier Home App is still not working. The App still tries to open up and just goes back to the Apple Home page. It’s been over 3 weeks and I still am unable to use the App.
We held off updating my wife’s iPhone and iPad but it just updated automatically and now her App won’t work.

Since Apple doesn't own Carrier, nor their app, what did Carrier suggest when you surely contacted them about the issue with their app? Apple has no control over their app at all. Apple can't touch the code in their app. If their app doesn't work with the new iOS, they need to fix it.
