Apps don’t work after updating to iOS 18.1.1

I updated my iOS to 18.1.1 on my iPhone pro max 16 last night and this morning I’d say about 80% of my apps refuse to open. Reinstalling doesn’t seem to solve the issue. Causing me major issues as I can’t open my banking apps to verify transactions. Can anyone tell me how to roll back my iOS update or if there is a fix?

I found a way to open the apps. It was still a big pain.... I went into the App Store app. I then clicked on my profile at the top of the app. I updated any apps that needed updating, and then opened every app one by one from the App Store app. I had to find and re-enter some of my passwords, but I believe everything is working now. The biggest headache was getting my password manager app working to allow me to get to the passwords.

I have had no problems whatsoever, I am running a VPN to the bank and all keeps working so there is no problem either with installed VPN's (OpenVPN) as was previously suggested by someone who claims VPN's are the choice of scammers, while in fact that is fearmongering by governments that want to have full vision and control of what you do on the internet, instead it will (moderately) protect you against attacks and hacks instead.

But back on-topic, there must be something wrong with the Iphone -update combination, maybe iOS18.1.1 only runs smooth on the newest phones.. (got a 16 pro).

So it would be interesting to see which Iphones are effected by this event. I cannot test myself because my old one is not supporting anything above iOS15, the whole reason for buying a new one.. I tend to keep my phone for 8 years before passing them to my kids...

I cannot believe you are suggesting this, do you say that the bank can see in my phone that I have installed a VPN client even-though I do not use it? That would be a severe breach of privacy a bank is not allowed to do or breach of allowed permissions the app would have, for that matter, I never believe Apple would allow an app in the app store, to get a list of all apps you have installed, this is not George Orwell's 1984 (close but not yet).

VPN is protecting your privacy and helping with your safety online, I would recommend every world citizen to use one. It mainly prevents your ISP from snooping on you and prevents MITM attacks (unless your VPN provider is the MITM).

I agree some apps won't work when using a VPN because the communication between the (bank) app and the (bank) app provider fails because traffic with the server from the VPN is blocked (like Netflix and other entertainment companies do), but that is as far as it goes.

Unless you have the Pegasus spyware on your phone....

Nope, I never said that banks look in your iPhone or violate your privacy. You’re putting words in my mouth, which I don’t appreciate.

What countries does your VPN route your internet connection through? Do you think banks are skeptical of connections from certain regions of the world? Do you think VPN connections don’t leave fingerprints? How about when your internet connection is from California but your iPhone is in Miami? Turn off location services and see how your bank reacts. If it doesn’t react, I’d be suspicious of the bank’s security and reconsider doing business with them.

I get the reason for a VPN and I used them almost 20 years ago when my employer required it. But thinking scammers and hackers don’t use VPNs is burying your head in sand.

In the future if you want to know something ask. I’m happy to explain some things about security methods in the financial system.

You suggested that having a VPN installed (not using) would be enough for a bank app to fail working. This can only work, if the bank and the bank app can detect what you have installed on your phone, so I am not putting words into your mouth, you actually said them, no matter you appreciate them or not, you cannot tell nonsense here to people with problems with their phones. the VPN app has nothing to do with the failed apps / apps not working. Even Apple apps seem to fail working with some, how to explain that? Would you suggest then that Apple is actively bricking phones that have VPN's installed and this is by design without prior notice to apple owners?? No I do not think so.

You are actually putting words in my mouth or English is not your native language.

I did not say that scammers do not use VPN's, I said that ordinary people should all use VPN's, why else will they advertise on scammer payback and actively being promoted as a safety measure to prevent data theft, the whole reason scammers can target you because they got your info leaked.

My VPN is blocked by Youtube, at least some servers, in general I need to use for example a Switzerland based server as location to access youtube with a VPN. For my banking, my banking app has no permission to see my location therefore it is not relevant, banking apps should not require that permission in the first place. for your own safety you can allow it though.

But especially for the reason of using a VPN, I don't and I can access my banks (all of them) from anywhere in the world, if needed, with any IP address. I have MFA for every step in my banking app, that is more secure than any location service preventing me to log in.

One remark here, due to massive DDos attacks on my bank 2 weeks ago, originating from Russia, the bank took preventive measures to keep the connections working to limit access by own country IP addresses only, so I switched to a local server from my VPN provider and I had access again. ;)

This reply applies to all my banks but I must say it is a bit off topic won't you say?

conclusion:

  • VPN's are good,
  • scammers are bad and also use VPN's (at least the smarter ones)
  • Banking apps do not see if you have any other app installed and therefore cannot be the reason for not working if a certain apple certified app is installed (like OpenVPN app).
  • VPN apps installed have nothing to do with the problems everyone has with this update, so do not spread this kind of false information please.

Extremely upset with this update. My text messages are coming in after hours of delay, my maps will not load, browser pages will not load, I could not use the calculator app for two days which I use for emergency drug calculations in the veterinary ER. Email and Snapchat notifications come through but the messages aren’t delivered for hours to come. My phone is a year old and still being paid for. This has been disastrous on so many levels - my patients have been delayed in receiving care, I was abandoned on back roads with the map no longer loading, delayed text messages that were urgent in nature. I am furious.

My iPad is totally on the fritz since this update. Everything I try to click on has a box or rectangle that pops up around the icon in question and Siri describes out loud what I am clicking on. Despite that nothing actually opens unless I repeatedly tap it at high speed. Also, if I do get lucky and open something, I can’t scroll or type. I can barely reboot it though I’ve managed to twice and it changed nothing. It is not usable at all!
