Latest version of macOS Monterey 12.7.6 not available on App Store

Hi, I live in Italy where unfortunately Apple did not set up a local Apple community. I would like to create a bootable USB installer of the latest version of macOS Monterey, i.e. 12.7.6 but when I try to unload it from my App Store, the download window asks me to confirm if I want to download 'macOS Monterey 12.7.4'.

Of course this wouldn't be a problem if I were to install it on a new drive, I would just update this version following the instalment. However, if I try to re-install it on a drive that already has the updated version, i.e. 12.7.6, of course the installer will warn me that it cannot downgrade.

Is there a particular reason why Apple has not made the latest version available on the App Store?

Thank you

Within that linked article is a link to another article that has links to various macOS installers. See if the Monterey link in that article will give you the 12.7.1 installer. Here is a direct link to the Apple article which has links to various versions of macOS:

How to download and install macOS - Apple Support

If that still does not give you the proper installer, then try using the Terminal with the following commands....the first will check to see which installers are available for your computer while the second is the command to download a specific version of macOS installer....you need to use one of the valid version numbers from the previous command:

softwareupdate --list-full-installers

softwareupdate -d --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version <version-number>

For macOS 12.7.1, the last command would be:

softwareupdate -d --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 12.7.1

If none of this works, then try rebooting the computer. I know when Sequoia was first released none of my computers would show the most recent versions or even download them. It was a month later when my laptops finally were able to list all of the available versions & allow a download using the command line. Sometimes these Macs just get into a state where they won't properly see the update....or it could be an Apple issue (or both).

Yes I did, 41 days ago. Apparently Apple removed it. So as I said, 12.7.4 is the only full installer available.

Feel free to send Apple feedback.

Feedback - macOS - Apple

Since Monterey is no longer supported, I doubt they will restore it. Can't hurt to ask.

You can try deleting the Software Update .plist preference file followed by rebooting the system to see if that will allow the system to pull the correct information from Apple since macOS should create a new default file & update it. I did this once for one of my organization's Macs and it made the problem worse where it didn't pull any information when using the command line to list the full installers. The Software Update preference file is located:

/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist

Have you tried to use those commands while booted into Safe Mode?

Do you have access to another Mac that is compatible with Monterey to attempt to download the 12.7.6 installer?

Another option would be to install macOS to a new APFS volume (assuming you have at least 80GB+ of Free storage space), or to an external USB3 SSD. Then boot from the new clean OS on that volume/drive to see if you can download the 12.7.6 installer using one of the methods already suggested.

Otherwise, like @John Galt said, you will probably need to have Apple examine the computer first hand. Some things are just too difficult to troubleshoot in a forum setting and requires being able to see everything first hand.

All the older versions of macOS have the latest version of the installer because you cannot install an older version of macOS over a newer version. Sometimes it's necessary to re-install over the latest version, as in my case. Peter Pappas said that: “In fact the Apple support rep said it should be available and passed the information onto who ever maintains the App store.” So I guess it will just be a matter of time before Apple will restore the latest version on the App store.

I understand what you want to do, but I have no way to know which Monterey version would appear for you in Italy. Since you determined it is outdated I can only surmise Apple has not made a subsequent, localized version. My attempts to download the version available to you resulted in "not available in the US App Store" or words to that effect, which was not surprising.

Contact Apple.

Thanks. I tried both of your suggestions, but unfortunately it didn't work. I contacted Apple Italia Support and they weren't aware of this issue. They also replied that availability by country and region depends on the terms and conditions of the relevant country and suggested that I contact Product Feedback for a possible solution.

I realize this thread is a couple of months old, but I have the exact same problem and I am in San Jose, California. I have four 2015 Macs in my household all running the latest release of Monterey, 12.7.6. I want to create a bootable installer, but the App store will only download 12.7.4. When I list the available installers, this is all I get.

I just spent an hour on the phone with an Apple support person and she was stumped. Someone at Apple has messed up because the info page on the App store says its 12.7.6, but getting the info on what it wants to download, shows it's 12.7.4. Who know how long Apple will take to fix this.

Earlier in this thread you actually showed 12.7.6 being available with the terminal command. So clearly it was there once. In fact the Apple support rep said it should be available and passed the information onto who ever maintains the App store. Without a 12.7.6 bootable installer, you cannot easily fix a system that won't boot even though it already had 12.7.6 installed and needs to be repaired. 12.7.4 will not install over it.

Maybe if more people sent this feedback to Apple, they would realize they made a mistake and fix it. I have already done that and will do it again and again until it's fixed.

I agree, in the past weeks I've sent this feedback three times already and shall continue do so too. All previous version of macOS have the installer with their respective latest version, why should the installer for Monterey be an exception? Also, the fact that they're labelling the installer on the App Store with the number of the latest version, strongly suggests that it is a question of human error and not of company policy for whatever reason.
