Spinning Wait Cursor when trying to update macOS Catalina

I have an iMac Retina 5K, 2019, 3.1 GHz 6-core Intel Core i5, 16 GB 2667 MHz DDR4. I am currently running Catalina 10.15.2 and would like to upgrade, but the checking for updates wheel just keeps spinning. Can anyone help?

Are you running any VPN, Anti-Virus, or Cleaning apps?

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes or more.

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works.

If that doesn't work try booting into this Restore Mode...

Option-⌘-R

Upgrade to the latest macOS compatible with your Mac.
