Migration Assistant from PC Can't Find My Mac

I'm trying to transfer files from my Windows PC to my MacBook Air 2021 using Migration Assistant. The software is loaded on both computers. I followed the instructions in Apple for picking the right installation for the PC so I believe I installed the right version. I got to the point where I could insert a 6-digit number where asked to on the PC. The program runs for awhile but always ends up with something like "Migration Assistant can't find your Mac". The note suggests that I move the Mac closer and/or to turn off firewalls, which I did, and tried 2 more times. Can you help?
