Inquiry Regarding iCloud Activation Lock on iPhone

Dear Apple Support Team,

I would like to inquire about an iPhone that is locked with iCloud (iCloud Activation Lock). I have a few questions that I need clarification on:

  1. If the device is locked with iCloud, is it possible to delete all the information stored on the device? What are the required steps to achieve this?
  2. If the device is confiscated by authorities or is part of an ongoing legal investigation, does Apple provide any support in accessing the device’s contents? If so, what steps should be followed?
  3. If I have proof of ownership of the device, how can I temporarily suspend the device until a request can be made to Apple to unlock it? What are the necessary steps to provide proof of ownership and regain access to the device?

I appreciate your time and effort in assisting me. I look forward to your guidance on the appropriate steps to take in this situation.

Thank you for your cooperation.

1) No, not if your purpose is to try to get into the device again. Yes if you are the owner of the device, can sign into your account on another device and you want to remotely erase the iPhone for security purposes.

2) We are users like yourself, not legal experts (unless one of us happens to be a lawyer, but nobody has said they were). I am just remembering several years ago when the FBI took an iPhone to Apple and asked them to unlock it. Apple refused. That's just what I heard on the news at the time and not to say they would always refuse.

3) Use Lost Mode in Find Devices on iCloud.com - Apple Support

If you're thinking of having activation lock removed. Apple can completely reset a device if a person can provide sufficient evidence of valid ownership. Check the requirements and steps at: Activation Lock support request - https://al-support.apple.com/#/additional-support Apple says, "Proof of ownership documentation is required," but does not detail what currently constitutes proof other than it “must include the product serial number, IMEI or MEID.” Apple may typically require the original receipt* issued by Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller. If Apple resets the device this will give you access to the device but won't restore access to the account used to lock it. There is nothing that can be done to expedite an Activation Lock request.

Just to expand on this point. Apple does provide a Transparency Report to show how many subpoenas they have received and the number that resulted in information being provided. For example from Jan to June of 2023, 81% of Device related request resulted in informateion being provided and 90% of Account related requests resulted in information being provided.

Privacy - Government Information Requests - Apple (US)

You can also view what type of data is requested, such as for Account related requested requests it says: Account requests may also seek customers’ content data, such as photos, email, iOS device backups, contacts or calendars.

There is also quite a bit of information you can view about the legal process guidelines here:
