Are there scanners that work well with iPads? I want to scan files to get rid of paper. I wondered if there were experienced users who do this? What scanners worked well for this?

There are many multifunction Printer/Scanner's available. Check for those that support AirPrint (for direct printing from Apple devices) - and for the manufacturer-supplied App that provides scanning capabilities.
Popular multifunction printer manufacturers are HP, Epson and Brother. By example, for HP Printers, you will need the HP Smart App for scanning:

Rather than use a scanner, I take photos and organize the documents in folders.
On a side note, I used to use the Neat scanner and organizational software. Now their software allows me to just take photos, combining photos when necessary for multipage documents.
