Can I replace the headband on my AirPods Max?

I've been using my airpods max for a year now, nothing out of the ordinary just indoor use and i recently discovered that the protective silicone layer on the outside of the headband has started to peel off. It's extremely bothering and i was looking forward to buying a new one from apple in order to change the defective one i have. After contacting support regarding this issue i got told that unfortunately there is no way of replacing it and that i should keep using the airpods as long as they work. I would like some help regarding this issue and maybe guidance on how i could possibly get the headband replaced.
