How is my child installing TikTok and Cash app without my permission or knowledge when I've set up Parental Controls and Family Sharing?

I checked my 13 yo sons iphone the other day and hes got a number of apps that not only not have never been installed on any of our devices before but he's trying to connect cash app to tiktok, which is a HUGE SAFETY RISK. People sell drugs on social media and many children have died from overdoses and fent laced drugs that have been sent from Snapchat, Instagram, TikTok, etc. I have people try to sell ME drugs on social media all the time.

Why am I having to deal with this when I set things up to have him ask me to install? Is there some idiotic default that allows free apps to be downloaded and installed even when the user is a child and parental controls have supposedly been set? Why would app installs be enabled by default?

IS IT POSSIBLE TO SET UP PARENTAL CONTROLS AS THEY SHOULD BE WHICH IS TO ASK ME BEFORE THEY INSTALL ANY APPS? Why is this even a thing? I get that some parents might want to allow their kids to download free apps but the default set up for a child should be to ASK BEFORE INSTALLING, especially when they are potentially dangerous portals to strangers having access to my children.

Apple you really dropped the ball. I am severely disappointed in this huge glaring safety issue.

  • You do have Ask to Buy. This will ask for your permission if an app can be downloaded from the App Store. Once a child is allowed to download it the first time, it will no longer require permission to download again. Even though it is call Ask to Buy, it also includes downloading free apps. Apple refers to anything downloaded from the App Store as a Purchase, that is why it will also show in the Purchase History.

  • Any child that uses TikTok, also needs to have Parental Control enabled on the TikTok site. They can offer much more specific restrictions such as communications on their platform and restrictions in their feeds that Apple is not able to do with Screen Time.

TikTok Controls

  • For a child that does not want to follow rules, then you have the option of removing the apps to make them earn your trust. You can prevent ANY apps from being installed by going to:

Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > iTunes & App Store Purchases > Installing Apps

  • Apps are just one aspect where children could be put in danger by communicating with bad actors. You should also restrict communication on the device to only those people that are in their Contacts. This not only restricts Phone contact, but also Messages from unknown characters.
