If the battery is completely run down, the iPhone cannot report its location, or "ring" if you call it. You will need to search for it the same way you would search for lost keys.

Sorry but you won't be able to. Once the iPhone is dead, it will stop displaying it's live location. You will have to look the old fashioned way.
