Re-format new Samsung T7 Shield ssd to apfs

Using Disk Utility to erase and re-format Samsung T7 Shield external ssd to APFS, I get a failure notice when trying to erase because the disk is in use. Can't unmount either. Instructions being used don't account for this. What am I missing?

If you haven't already, you can "force" unmount this drive using the following commands in the Terminal app:

  • First to determine what macOS identifies this drive as, use: diskutil list
  • Identify your Samsung T7 Shield SSD from the output (e.g., /dev/disk2).
  • Then force unmount the drive with this command: diskutil unmountDisk force /dev/diskX, replacing diskX with what you found in the previous command.

Once successfully unmounted, you can try using the Disk Utility again to erase/format the drive.

If the above didn't help, you should double-check that the Shield is running the latest firmware. This would require that you (again, if you haven't already) install the Samsung Portable Software to your Mac.
