when I try to erase and format a new ssd disk utility fails to unmount disk. I've tried all the suggestions including command line in terminal.

For me often the 1st try to erase an external disk fails because some background process (usually Spotlight or Photos indexing) is too eager to keep the disk to itself. But then almost always the 2nd attempt to erase succeeds. If not I'd try erase after rebooting or in safe mode, but AFAIR I have never needed to do that.

Today I tried starting using command +R key and ran Disk Utility without a hitch. I initialize an SSD Drive and after loading it with the OS my iMac runs like a brand new machine. Safari used to take 3 or 4 minutes just to start now it starts immediately as does email and everything else I've tried. I can't imagine why Apple or anyone would continue to use spinning hard drives anymore.
apparently this has been the solution for most people, not for me. I've tried. I've disconnected every external device to the iMac including wifi. I tried using force quit with Terminal command. Disk Utility should at least state the reason it can't unmount.

it comes down to cost. HDD drives are cheaper per TB than an SSD. and if you only need a drive for extra storage, an HDD is still a good option because of the cost.
and FWIW, apple no longer sells Macs that are HDD based. you can only get them with 100% flash storage.
