Design work is typically accomplished while you're seated at a desk. I think a desktop Mac would be more appropriate. Macs and iPads complement each other but it seems to me the majority of your time will be spent seated, whereas an iPad excels when you have to walk around with a device.
An answer depends on what professional work you need them to do. Professional architect? Professional athlete? Professional hairdresser?
