Apple Watch Ultra 2 locks when worn over clothes

When out running in real cold weather I want to wear my Apple Watch on top of my clothes, not directly on my wrist - but when I do so, it keeps locking - and it is a pain (if not almost impossible) to enter the passcode during a race, for example. (Strangely, the watch still seems to think if is reading my pulse - which I don't care about). But how to stop it locking?

Hello Ingo,

I would like to inform you that, apple watches are turned on or unlocked only when they have directly contact to your skin. As the sensors beneath the watch triggers a signal based on the signals received or sent from the sensors Apple Watch stays on or turns off.

Wearing it on the cloths doesn't allow the sensors to have contact with the skin and hence the watch is locked.
