How to remove the handwriting, receipts, documents, and illustrations albums

I don't like how Photos categorizes and sorts my images into albums I never asked for. It's also incorrect most of the time as I have no photos of receipts but the album has lots of images anyway. I don't have any photos of documents but... it is full too. You get the idea. How do I get rid of them? These features don't work anyway.

I would like to find a way to delete these albums or at least be able to remove photos from them, and disable the process that populates them. (I'd also like to have photos stop trying to identify faces and pets too for that matter.)

All I want from the Photos app are the editing tools, and to have a library of images sorted by date... and that's all. Everything else is useless to me.

That is disappointing. It's not about whether I can see them or not, or if they use more storage or not. If an app is doing something to my personal content without my permission it is an invasion of my privacy by definition. I want to delete those albums and make it stop scanning them for content... If I asked the app to do so, then I would be okay with it, but I didn't and from what you are saying, I don't have a choice.

And of course, to add insult to injury, it is wrong... none of those albums have anything in them that they claim and I can't correct them. So if I had asked the app to categorize, it would have failed. For example it thinks stylized graffiti and a cursive style of font is "handwriting." ...Cue the rolling of eyes...

I thank you for your clarification and time. It's not the answer I want but it is an answer.

Whether you read it or not, you gave permission when you updated to iOS 18.x

No it isn't... it is the same thing. If an app is going through my private documents without my permission and organizing it according to content then yes, it is like someone going through my closet.

The issue has already been answered by someone else, and you are very dismissive of people's concerns and that is not a helpful attitude. I ask that you remember that for next time.

How can a device totally under your control invade your privacy? Everything on your iPhone does stuff with your personal content, and does it only on the iPhone, where only you can see it, unless you explicitly choose to share it.

  • When an email arrives the Mail app extracts the meaningful content from the message to display it; all of the internal routing and headers are removed. That is doing stuff with your personal content.
  • When you take a photo the Camera app processes the raw data from the camera’s sensor and converts it to either HEIF or JPEG, thus messing with your personal content.
  • The Contacts app sorts your contacts alphabetically, regardless of how you entered the contacts, thus messing with your personal content.

There are many more examples; If you examine any app on your iPhone you will find it is doing stuff with your personal content.

But all with my permission. Please stop replying, the correct answer was provided by léonie already.

People are allowed to post in this forum as they see fit as long as they don't violate the terms of use.

I would note that leonie didn't address the issue of "permission," which is what you seem most upset about and which you keep discussing.

It’s possible to remove photos from the collection “Recently Shared”, see picture. Sooner or later the collection will repopulate, there’s no preventing that. But at least we’re in control of what’s in it.

Would it be so wrong to extend that feature to all collections and give back control?
