Standard connection does not appear to be recognized by MacBook - Is there a way to get it to work or do I need to purchase a different device (DVD Writer)?

an empty device will never seem to be 'recognized', as in Mounted on the desktop. Only mountable Volumes are Mounted on the desktop, and a naked Reader or Writer isn not that.
is the device seen in system information?

This appears to be a drive that wants to suck power from two USB ports for reliable operation.
