Why are my Olympus ORF Files not displaying as Photos?

When I transfer ORF Olympus raw photos to my desktop from any memory card, I only get the ORF extension files and not the photos themselves. This causes me to have to click on each extension file in order to see what the photo is. How can I only have all of the photos open and not the extension files of each photo?

As Yer_Man says, RAW files have different formats with different models. My Nikon Z5's NEF files are fully compatible with the Mac and with Photos, but my Nikon Z8's NEF files are not. Here is a list of RAW formats that are supported.

Digital camera RAW formats supported by iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, and visionOS 2 - Apple Support

RAW files like NEF or ORF are not pictures, (and jpgs are not pictures, either,) but they have information that can be turned into pictures with the right software. My Z8's NEFs look great when loaded into Nikon's NX Studio app or into Adobe's Lightroom Classic, but they normally don't show at all in Finder or Photos.

You may be able to change the format of your RAW files with Adobe's free Adobe Digital Negative Converter to convert your files to universal DNG files.

You could try Darktable. It's an open source RAW editor app and according to the documentation it opens ORF files.

Just as an FYI: Raw support has to be added on a camera model by camera model basis. The ORF produced by an an M5 is not the same as an M5 mkII. One of the defining characteristics of each camera model is the raw it produces.

Raw files are not actually files in the same sense as a .Docx is or even a .tiff. A Raw is a sensor dump from the camera, and as that is a product of the output from the sensor and the camera firmware, each model is unique.

So again a key question is the model of the camera, not just the brand.

There are multiple raw processors: Photos, Lightroom (both versions) Capture One, On One Photo Raw, DxO Photolab as well as open source ones like Darktable, RawTherapee. Some rely on OS support for the raws, but most have their own support. This is usually delivered faster than Apple do it.

I don't use it very often and find it a bit quirky, but online help resources are fairly good. There might be others - if so then I'm sure someone will chip in soon.

A quick search for Thumbnails disappeared in Sequoia Finder Gallery View seems to indicate it's a known problem. For example

why are image thumbnails not displaying i… - Apple Community

has a couple of users who say it's an indexing problem and just takes time for the Mac to re-index.

I suggest you peruse the thread above and maybe search the discussions a bit more. You could also try re-indexing the drive that the pictures are on.

I'm a bit confused now. Is what you are saying that you now have to click to see what pic is - you mean that in the past, Finder showed the picture as an icon for the jpeg files and it's not doing it now for the ORF files but when you open the ORF files you can see the pic?

What have you got your camera's image format set to. For example, I normally set mine to RAW +JPEG so when I look on the memory card there are two files for each pic - a JPEG file and a RAW file which in your case is an ORF format. When you talk about "photo file" and "extension file" do you mean JPEG and ORF? What's on the camera's memory card?

When I open my photos from my memory card onto my desktop Photo 1 is what I used to get, Photo 2 is what I get now. In Photo 2 I have to click on each thumbnail at the bottom in order to see each photo. In Photo 1 I can scroll through the thumbnails at the bottom and see all of my photos. Photo 1 example makes it easier to decide what I want to save for editing. I shoot in raw only and my photos are saved to my memory card using raw only.
