2022 or 2024 model MacBook Air?

Hope someone can explain. I bought my husband a new laptop through Best Buy. This is the description from the website and the invoice....."Apple MacBook Air 13.6 with Touch ID (Fall 2024). I asked my husband if he was going to upgrade to Sequoia and he said he couldn't as it was a 2022 MacBook. Sure enough, under "About This Mac" it says it is a 2022 model. Can anyone clarify why it says Fall 2024 but it's a 2022 laptop? Thanks in advance. Appreciate the feedback.

Apple introduced

  • 13" M1 MacBook Airs in November 2020
  • 13" M2 MacBook Airs in July 2022
  • 15" M2 MacBook Airs in June 2023
  • 13" and 15" M3 MacBook Airs in March 2024
  • 14" MacBook Pros with plain M4 chips in November 2024

Stock models of the M2 and M3 MacBook Airs used to come with only 8 GB of RAM, but Apple recently increased the minimum amount of RAM included with new Macs sold on their Web site to 16 GB of RAM. I'm not sure what a "Fall 2024" MacBook Air would be – unless this is a (confusing) reference to a M2 or M3 model with 16 GB of RAM. If the reference was to a 14" MacBook Pro with a plain M4 chip (which did come out in Fall 2024), the description is wrong with respect both to the model name and to the screen size.

It sounds to me as if Best Buy erred either in the description of the laptop advertised OR they sold you the wrong laptop - the 2022 rather than the 2024. Also under "About This Mac" you'll find which M chip is in the computer, either M2 or M3.

If you feel the MacBook Air that you purchased was in error or misrepresented by the advertising, you'll have to take it up with Best Buy. I can't say what BB's return policy is, but that's something you might need to consider.

Either way, as @stedman1 posted, both laptops are capable of running macOS Sequoia. Your husband might look at this: How to upgrade to macOS Sequoia - Apple Support
