USB-C Magic Keyboard lagging over cabled connection

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this? I bought a new USB-C Magic Keyboard (model A3119) as I liked the idea of having touch-ID on the keyboard.

However the response of the keyboard is lacklustre at best. it lags typing anywhere. Browser, word, searching. you name it.

I have the keyboard connected with the USB C cable as I cannot use a wireless keyboard with work.

I use a USB-C docking station and swap my work laptop and personal MacBook Air M1 through the same dock. The docking station I'm using is a Targus 182-Q2 docking station.

The keyboard works fine on my Dell Windows work laptop - but lags beyond belief with my M1 MacBook Air.

I've connected the USB-C cable directly to one of the two ports on my MacBook Air to limit the potential for the docking station to be the cause of this.

however even as I type this out - it's a good half-second from when I type to when the letter appears here.

anyone else experience this?
