WhatsApp not receiving messages or calls on iPhone 14 Pro Max until app is opened

Why doesn’t my iPhone 14 Pro Max receive WhatsApp messages or calls unless I open the app, even though it’s connected to Wi-Fi and has a stable internet connection?

I tested this by sending a message from another WhatsApp account, and it only shows a single tick (sent but not delivered), and even when I tried calling myself, the call didn’t show until I opened the app.

I’ve checked the notification settings and background app refresh, and everything is turned on. WhatsApp and my phone’s software both have the latest updates installed.

I am not sure what this is.

You cannot make a WhatsApp call to yourself on the same device. WhatsApp is designed for communication between two different users. While you can send yourself messages, audio calls, and video calls are not supported within a single device.
