M4 monitor wake issue with USB-C hub setup

Just upgraded from an M2 to M4 and using the same exact setup (a usb-c hub for ethernet/power and separate usb-c cable to Dell monitor). On my M2 when the computer woke up the monitor would turn on; on the M4 the monitor never turns on when the computer wakes and I have to unplug the two cords and plug the monitor in first, if I do it out of order it won't work either.

Is this a regression or a known issue that will be fixed sometime soon or does anyone know a solution?

Thanks

The Mac does not rely on windows-like side-loaded "Drivers" which are actually packages of resolutions and settings for a specific display. Instead, it goes straight to the immutable source -- it asks the display itself.

To get a Mac display to become active, you need the Mac to query the display, and the display to answer with its name and capabilities. Otherwise, the display will not be shown as present, and no data will be sent to the display. "No signal detected" is generated by the DISPLAY, not by the Mac.

This query is only sent at certain times:

• at startup

• at wake from sleep — so momentarily sleeping and waking your Mac may work

• at insertion of the Mac-end of the display-cable, provided everything on that cable is ready-to-go

• hold the Option key while you click on the (Detect Display) button that will appear in Displays preferences (from another display)

You stated that you were FORCED to plug and unplug your displays. Since there is a bit more to getting displays recognized, I posted my accumulated thoughts on exactly how 'getting displays recognized' works in detail.

In some cases when I add what I know about a process, it gets users thinking, and stimulates more discussion on the subject, or different ways of thinking about the problem. I see that as one of the strengths of the Multiple-readers forum format.

The people who are answering your questions here are NOT Apple employees. They are other users, who Volunteer their time and energy to help you in whatever way they can.

Sometimes you might get information that is tangential to you wanted to know, or WAY more information than you wanted.

PLEASE try to be gracious in your responses. If you got more than you wanted to hear, Please do not assault the person who gave you tangential or ‘too much' information. Instead, understand that they were TRYING to be helpful, even if their answer did not line up perfectly with your query.

Just ignore the overage and get on with solving your problems, and count your blessings that someone was willing to help, even if the answer was "too much" or “way off base”.

If important parts of your question did not get answered, just ask a more pointed question and Readers will try again.

When you type text an any major language, it can be auto-translated. if you really want to baffle a Bot, post your test question as a screenshot of text, which is much harder to auto-tranlste.

I don't speak Japanese, but I can use an auto-translator

日本語で答える必要がありますか?

if I answer 'What is Apple Newton from Japanese, does that mean I AM a bot? or I am NOT a bot?
