Streaming video from iPhone or iPad via HDMI
I have a 2008 Samsung big screen with a fistful of fully functional HDMI ports. It’s not smart, but it runs flawlessly and I'd prefer not to dump it. I know that if my tv were any smarter, it would constantly barrage me with marketing for AV services, subscriptions, and videos I neither need nor want nor have the time to scroll through. What I do want to do and am finding impossible to accomplish is to stream video directly from my late-model and up-to-date Apple devices to the old Samsung via HDMI.
On my iPad, I’ve installed the apps for each of the streaming services to which I subscribe, including YouTubeTV, Prime Video, Netflix, and others. Then, I plug an Apple Lightning-to-HDMI adapter into my iPad or phone, plug a quality HDMI cable into the adapter and the tv and…nothing. I can get a great shot of my Apple device's or a provider’s home page, but after selecting a video and pushing play, nothing.
Occasionally, I’ll get video sound, but no picture. (Six months ago, oddly, several of those providers streamed to my tv under the same setup conditions.) Occasionally I get an error screen from a provider warning me that recording is prohibited, my HDMI cable is substandard, or my WiFi speed is insufficient. Recording? I can’t stream. Further, my HDMI cable is top notch, my router is brand new, and my WiFi speed is sufficient for up to six devices streaming simultaneously.
Troubleshooting on provider forums, I see recommendations to, mostly, turn all my equipment off and back on again. That’s a time investment I don’t really want to make each time I watch a 30-minute sit-com. Other than a new tv, which I’d like to avoid, what's missing here?
