HELP! -- is "iforgot.apple.com" legit?

Hello. I was helping my mother retrieve access to her icloud and was pointed to go to the website "iforgot.apple.com". Once there I got the option to either reset the password using a different device (didnt work) or some other alternative which included specifying mail, phone and credit card info (this is the part that has me worried).

I thought it was really strange but didnt look further since it was a "apple.com" website-- but does Apple really ask your credit card as confirmation of your identity? I feel like its some phising scam and I have blocked my card for now.

Can anyone confirm/deny my worries? 😓

They can use your credit card information to verify your identify to shorten the recovery time. You do not have to provide it, but in some cases they will have nothing to prove you are actually the owner of the account. This would likely be the case if you had not had a Trusted phone number set up on the account, access to the email address used for the Apple ID, or a Recovery Contact set up.

It is legitimate and Apple details the process here:

In some cases, you might be able to shorten the account recovery process or reset your password immediately by verifying a six-digit code sent to your primary email address. You might also be able to shorten the wait time by providing credit-card details to confirm your identity. If you’re given this option, an authorization request goes to the card issuer.*
