Desktop and files missing after disabling iCloud on Mac

I un-synced from iCloud because it kept pestering me to pay for more storage. when I did, I lost EVERYTHING on my desktop and none of the suggestions here have worked. I have NO name visible at the top of the finder or the system settings options as they say, no option for iCloud even appears and NO desktop anyplace. Some of the files show on 'recents' but now I NEED TO RESTORE ALL OF THESE AS WELL AS MY DESKTOP! Help!

According to the following excerpt from Add your Desktop and Documents files to iCloud Drive - Apple Support this is what is supposed to happen if turned off iCloud Drive or if you signed out of iCloud:

If you turn off iCloud Drive or sign out of iCloud, a new Desktop and Documents folder is created in your home folder. You also have the option to keep a local copy of your files that are in iCloud Drive. If you keep a local copy of your files in iCloud Drive, they're copied to a folder called iCloud Drive (Archive) in your home folder. You can move any files that were in your iCloud Desktop and Documents to your new local Desktop and Documents.

I had to look up where the 'home' folder i. I'll have to hand transfer everything as it doesn't open if I try and swipe it to the desktop. I had to PAY the extended service to iCloud to restore my files. now, next month, because I refuse to be backed into a corner like that--I'll look up how to UNsync from iCloud and SAVE my files! must be that info out there someplace. Thanks for the tip, it led me to a solution. Ultimately, I HAD to sign up for more storage on iCloud to retrieve data. Extortion to me!
