Safari keeps asking for default browser / can‘t connect to app store

When opening safari it asks about the default browser and immediately throws a pop-up that says ‚can’t connect to the app store‘. It happens repeatedly every time I close safari and reopen it.

does anyone have an idea what causes this?

App store opens automatically when I open Safari When I open Safari, it shows briefly on my screen then slides out of the way and there's the App store in its place. Even if I quit the app store, the next time I open Safari the same thing happens. I cleared cookies and that didn't fix the issue.
