I may replace it with a new laptop however either way I would like to connect to a large monitor. Apple monitors are too expensive. Is there another less expensive brand that is compatible with a laptop? thanks!!

As Steve said, there are a plethora of monitors available. Just about any standard display will work, as will a number of televisions. Without knowing your needs and preferences, it's pretty much impossible to offer recommendations. You can start with one of the review sites like this one:

or if you post details about what you're looking for and what is most important to you - size, resolution, color accuracy, extra features like a built-in webcam or speakers - someone can probably suggest a specific unit.

Most commercial third party monitors will work. I have used Samsung and Dell external monitors.
Gosh sorry I should have thought of that! I need to work from home reading excel like pages with lots of data in the form of numbers, notes, and reviewing images, etc. Images can be in the form of photos, graphs, x-rays
