Being asked to sign in to download app on child's iPad

I recently set up my child's iPad with their iCloud account and parental controls turned on. Everything has been fine until they tried to download an app. First we get asked for the passcode, which we know. Then we get asked to sign-in, but it only has a box for a password. I've tried using the password for my child's iCloud account and the password for my iCloud account, but neither works. I tried using the passcode again as well, but that didn't work. I have no idea what other "sign-in" it would be.

About turning off password protection

You can't completely turn off password protection for paid items on your iPhone, iPad, or computer. On Apple TV, you can turn off password protection for both free and paid items.

If you enabled Touch ID or Face ID for purchases in the App Store and other Apple services, you'll be asked to use Touch ID or Face ID for every download, even if the item is free.

Manage what kids buy or download:

If you use Family Sharing, you can use Ask to Buy to control what kids buy. When a child asks to buy an item or download a free item, the family organizer can approve or decline the request.

Do you have an Apple device of your own? You can't manage a child's iPad or associated App purchasing from the child's device alone.

Signing-out from the child's AppleID and using your own AppleID on your child's iPad isn't viable - as you may be prevented from signing-in again with a different AppleID for 90-days.
