How do shut down the screen but not the device itself ?

I just got a newer ipad and dont know how to turn off just the screen. On my older one, you would just touch the top button

Absolutely lock iPhone screen when the phone is in your pocket I’ve tried every setting. I turned off the always on display. I’ve locked the screen before I put it in my pocket. Then while it’s in my pocket, it comes on and then whatever’s on the screen gets touched like the start stop button for the audio player. I want to be able to lock the screen off until I not the phone I push and hold the button on the side for three seconds to have it come back on again. I want control the phone. I want the screen off, not taking any input not active of a tap until I push and hold the button on the side for three or four seconds. Comprende.
