Unresponsive touch screen and overheating on new iPhone 16 Pro Max

Hello. I am attempting to troubleshoot a brand new Iphone 16 Pro Max. I believe a customer became impatient during the initial update and shut the device down at some point during the out-of-the-box update process. as a result the device powers on, gets past the Apple logo and gets to the "Hello3 wallpaper screen. Swiping up on the device is difficult as the touch screen feels unresponsive. When you are able to swipe up the lock screen appears briefly before the phone displays a black screen pinwheel then resets, starting the cycle over. The phone gets and remains very hot the entire time it is powered on, sometimes powering down presumably due to thermal throttling. I have attempted to connect it to my mid 2012 model Macbook Pro but the Pro Max is not recognized by the Mac. I am also unable to get the Pro Max to display the "connect to computer" screen when attempting to boot into recovery mode with the USB cable connected to the Mac. Unsure on next steps. My Mac is an older model and is only capable of OS Catalina; I'm wondering if that might be why the Mac and Iphone wont speak to one another. I do have a current model PC i can use to attempt to enter recovery mode but I suspect the issue is with the phone. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you!

Here are some common solutions you can attempt:

  • The process shown in the Apple Video below may help

  • You may try restoring as per the Apple Videos given below

  1. Follow the Apple article to resolve the issue --> If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won't turn on or is frozen ...
  2. If not resolved; please follow the steps in the following link for support with this issue: If your iOS device restarts or displays the Apple logo or a spinning gear unexpectedly
  3. Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary software glitches. Turn off your iPhone, wait for a few seconds, and then turn it back on.
    1. Restart the device. That's it.
    2. Still not solved --> Force restart iPhone - Apple Support
  4. Make sure you have the latest updates installed. Update using iTunes/Finder —> Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support (IN)
  5. You still see a black screen after charging, force restarting, following the steps in this article.
    1. You see a black screen, but you can hear alerts, sounds, and vibrations.
    2. The screen remains black, but the device chirps when you unmute it and connect it to power.
    3. Your screen is on, but it doesn't respond when you tap, slide, or try other gestures.
    4. You can't force your device to restart because a button is broken or stuck.
    5. Your device is stuck on the Apple logo, displays a solid color, or isn't recognized in iTunes.
    6. Contact Apple Support to set up service if you have any of the above issues:
  6. Please follow the steps in the following Apple Video for support with this issue:

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it is recommended to reach out to Apple Support or visit an authorized service center for further assistance. They can provide specific guidance based on your device model and iOS version.

📱Facing iPhone heating issues? Here's what worked for me on my iPhone 12 Pro:

1️⃣ Backup on iCloud/iTunes

2️⃣ Log out of Apple ID

3️⃣ Erase (Keep eSIM Data)

❌ DO NOT restore from backups! Set up as new iPhone. Wait 2-3 days - no issue! That Indicates...

✅ No hardware/ iOS issue

Now...

📦 Restore data gradually

🔍 Find app/settings causing heat

My experience says this is purely caused by some third-party app that you may have installed.

I am not aware of the ambient temperature in which you are using the iPhone. However --> Keeping iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch within acceptable ...

Store the device where the temperature is between -20º and 45º C (-4º to 113º F). Don’t leave the device in your car, because temperatures in parked cars can exceed this range.

Use iOS devices where the ambient temperature is between 0º and 35º C (32º to 95º F). Low- or high-temperature conditions might cause the device to change its behavior to regulate its temperature. Using an iOS device in very cold conditions outside of its operating range might temporarily shorten battery life and could cause the device to turn off. Battery life will return to normal when you bring the device back to higher ambient temperatures. Using an iOS device in very hot conditions can permanently shorten battery life.
