iPhone XR touchscreen partially unresponsive after heat exposure

I updated my iPhone XR to 18.5 and later that day I put it in my pick up truck. Forgot about it until late at night and I said I’ll I’ll just get it in the morning. So I got to the truck at noon time and saw that the phone was shut off on a heat warning. So I cooled it down and I just stuck it on my dashboard in a vehicle on it naturally cool down by the air conditioning and when I went to use it the bottom 1/4-1/2”

was unresponsive. So it makes it impossible to do anything even with only that small of an area unresponsive. So now I’ve got a dilemma. I’ve tried the fixes the reset volume up volume down, hold it until the Apple logo comes on. I wiped it clean and now I’m thinking about going here and getting my an earlier back up if that’s the problem or I’m trying to figure out if it’s a hardware problem or a software problem is there any diagnostic stuff that I can get? In other words to tell me whether it’s a hardware problem or if it’s the digitizer or if the known glitch in the 18.5 that renders sometimes screens unresponsive. It’s a beautiful phone yeah it’s older, but it doesn’t have a mark on it it’s always been dependable. It’s the first problem I’ve ever had so yeah I don’t know what else to. I don’t know what else what other information to give the question is if I did the reset and got nowhere with that what other steps can I take and/or of like a real diagnostic? They can tell me if it’s one or the other yeah I know I probably repeated myself a dozen times here. thank you for your help in advance. I’ll be looking for answers. Thank you

I tried that the hard reset. I was just going to wipe it clean and then get one of my recent backups that didn’t have the 18.5 and had an earlier version of iOS. Thinking if I was lucky that might’ve been a problem, but I think this person nailed it yeah I think it is the hardware issue. It’s a shame because the phone is spotless. Absolutely pristine all right well yeah thanks for your input there.

Backups don't contain the iOS, so restoring from an earlier backup made before updating to 18.5 will NOT restore your phone to an earlier iOS versions. Once updated, you can't downgrade. And the iOS version didn't likely hurt your phone. But the extreme heat likely did. You now have a hardware issue and you need to schedule an appointment at your Apple Store Genius Bar for evaluation and service options. Keep in mind that iPhone XR is now a pretty old iPhone. When iOS 26 is released in the fall, it will not be capable of updating past iOS 18.5. Instead of investing anything in an older iPhone, it might make more sense to spend the money on a new iPhone.

If your iPhone showed the heat warning and the screen is now partially unresponsive, this looks like a battery hardware issue. The heat might have caused the battery to expand and press agains the screen from the inside.

The iPhone has to be serviced. Given the costs of getting the whole iPhone replaced, it might be better to invest in a newer iPhone model.

Yeah, I pretty much figured that I’d be replacing it if you know if I couldn’t fix it easily. So yeah I’ve already been shopping for replacement. Actually I’ve got another one that I run in. I have two of them and I this is like my secondary one that Does DoorDash and Uber and that kind of stuff you know so it doesn’t have to be high check but everybody thank you for your for your input and yeah, I guess the general consensus is that she’s toast. Enjoy your day everybody.
