Airpods die very quick in cold/wind

I’ve noticed recently that on my runs in freezing temps(~20°F) with winds at 15-20mph my AirPods die within 3 minutes. They are about 4 years old now but work perfectly fine all other times and usually the batteries last me a couple weeks. But I charged them to 100% 2 nights ago. Haven’t used them til tonight and the pods and the case dropped to 0. I was even wearing a beanie over them and the case was in my car. I know batteries have problems in the cold in general but does anyone else have this problem?

You’re outside the specified usage range:

Keeping AirPods within acceptable operating temperatures - Apple Support

with some old and quite probably degraded batteries.

Per Apple: ”Using AirPods in very cold conditions outside of their operating range might temporarily shorten battery life and could cause the device to turn off.”
