OK, so it affects hundreds of people out of 2 billion, so it is almost certainly a hardware failure of a tiny minority of those user’s iPhones. You had the choice of purchasing AppleCare+ when you bought the phone, which would have extended the warranty indefinitely (first 2 years, plus continuing monthly for a small fee after that). Stuff happens, and things break. You just lost the bet that your repair costs would be less than the cost of the extended warranty, a decision that billions of people face for almost anything they buy. No. I’m saying things fail. No manufacturing process is perfect.

Apple offers AppleCar+ extended coverage. If you opted not to take it, then once the one year warranty expires, you have to pay for any needed repairs.

That’s the way it works with pretty much everything.

That’s how warranties work. Once the warranty is expired, you have to pay for repairs.

Frankly, a display that is defective will fail long before a year has elapsed, usually within a couple of weeks, so a failure after a year is almost certainly due to damage of some kind; water, a drop, sitting on it, etc.
