Front camera is black when opened from messages

I see this has been posted in various forms over the years….there never seems to be a definitive fix.

My iphone 14 pro has a problem. The camera works fine, front and rear both fine, no issues at all.

However, when I am in the messages app and open the camera from within the messages app, the front camera is black. The selfie camera can be selected and works fine but the front camera is black. Tired a suggested zoom out zoom in fix but no difference at all.

The phone has the very newest update 18.2.1 yet this problem still exists. Obviously its not a hardware issue as the camera works fine when opened as a stand-alone app.

Ive tried restarting and even full factory reset but always the same issue persists.

Seems nobody can fix this, another software glitch we have to endure.

Just to reiterate, this is not a hardware error as the camera works fine when opened from the camera app.

Anybody any ideas? It seems Apple are once again clueless.

Additional details. You originally said it was Messages that was the issue. Messages is an Apple app. In your last post you said Messenger, a Meta app (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp etc.) and that’s a different issue. There are multiple posts about Messenger causing this issue on several social media platforms.

If it’s Messenger, yes, I believe it’s a software issue that Meta needs to address. Messages has some reports that it could be software related, but easy to diagnose with a short phone call. If the camera fails remote diagnostics, you know what you’re up against.
