Microsoft Authenticator didn't migrate to new iPhone

Hi,

I was handed a new iPhone and was very excited about it.

The migration of everything was amazing. I erased the old phone, but when accessing some sites, I couldn't use the Microsoft Authenticator because accounts weren't migrated. I assume it was part of the process, but the Microsoft Authenticator needed special treatment.

So, I have the old phone, but I don't have information and can't access Microsoft Authenticator.

Any suggestions, or am I screwed?

Migration of TOTP authenticators is often a VERY hard spot.

If you can’t get back in to your old phone, you very well might need to start over.

Been there … done that. Learned a lesson.

On a bright note … this might prove to be a good opportunity to securely archive all of your TOTP “seeds” to help prevent a “next time” …

… or migrate to FIDO2 / Passkeys if offered.

Also for your consideration … Apple’s Passwords app DOES provide the same TOTP functionality.

You need to contact Microsoft for help with their services, this is not an Apple issue.

Authenticators don’t migrate because they are linked to the hardware they are installed on. You must install the authenticator, then add the accounts (tap + at the top) that were on the previous device.
