How to resolve iPhone 17's 2-Step Verification process showing an unknown device?

When I go into 2 step verification process for Passkey system says I can only have 3 devices and asks whether I trust new device. I’m asked whether ie my new iPhone 17. But it asks if I trust an iPhone 18 not an iPhone 17.

System keeps asking if I trust this device and I can’t sign into various Apps without pressing yes. Eventually I pressed ‘trust’, but worried a hacker had got into my system.

I found a similar post in 2022 that said it’s an iCloud cache issue? It advised to go into Settings and change the name of my new phone to something like ‘My iPhone’. Re boot, sign in and out of iCloud. Notes said it was a very long laborious process so I wanted to check with Apple community first before I put myself through this process.

My new iPhone 17 has had ongoing issues that are taking up enormous amounts of my time to solve.

Any advice really welcome!

The name of your Device is listed at Settings > General > About > Name, and it is easy to change.

Also note that a Model Identifier of a device is completely different than the type of the device you have, so not sure where you are seeing the iPhone 18 being listed and whether that is showing the Model Identifier or name of the device you have listed in Settings.

  • iPhone18,1 = iPhone 17 Pro
  • iPhone18,2 = iPhone 17 Pro Max
  • iPhone18,3 = iPhone 17
  • iPhone18,4 = iPhone Air

If you have a screenshot of where you are seeing this it may be helpful, as long as it does not reveal any personal information.

Apple has never released any device called iPhone 18.

UPDATE: Mac Jim ID’s comment regarding your device name does apply. Might you have mistakenly named some device “iPhone 18”?

Ps It sounds as though I haven’t been hacked. I can see iPhone is same as 18,3.

ill go back and look later and send a screenshot,

if the process to change phone name laborious && time consuming? If so I’ll allow time before I do it.

I’ve got lots of other questions I will post later. Gremlins with new iPhone and Mac Air. I’ve spent hours on Apple support
