Are you attempting to unlock a locked iPad from an external keyboard? If so, this isn't possible; you must use the iPad's touch-screen to unlock the iPad.

Perhaps instead you are having difficulty connecting an external keyboard to your iPad. If this is the case, are you attempting to use a wireless (Bluetooth) keyboard - or a wired (USB) keyboard with your iPad?
