I just purchased a 2024 MacBook Air and am trying to transfer 900GB from my old MacBook Pro. Migrations Assistance has been continuously running for almost 48 hours. The activity bar is still moving but the number of fils transferred (45,000) has not changed since it started. How long do I wait before calling it quits and returning the new computer?
Per chance are you trying doing this migration via a Wi-Fi connection for both devices? If so, that would be by far the slowest method for this process. Are you migrating from a Time Machine backup of your MacBook Pro?
Alternately, consider using Ethernet on both to your local network or have them directly connected together by a Thunderbolt/USB-C cable.
If the progress bar is moving but the file count hasn't changed, another option is to cancel the migration and try again. Make sure to select fewer items for transfer initially (e.g., just user data without applications or settings) to test.
Before migrating did you verify that the new MacBook Air has enough space to accommodate the 900GB transfer from your MacBook Pro?

Use your TM backup to migrate and not the other Mac.
Ok, using a direct Thunderbolt connection, should provide the fastest means to get this done.
The fact that it has stalled would not have been expected. As such, I would go with my previous reply to stop the migration, and then, restart it.

I am using a thunderbolt cable for the transfer.
The progress baron both computers is moving but the number of files is the same.
The new computer has 2 TB of space.
Any other suggestions?
