audio from MacBook pro to external amp

Hello everyone, I use Hi-Fi components to listen to music from my MacBook Pro (16", Nov. 2023, M3 Max, OS 14.7.2) via external speakers.

The audio signal goes from the MacBook Pro to a preamplifier, from there to a power amplifier and from there to two speakers - so it's a classic setup.

The modern preamplifier has a DAC, Bluetooth, WiFi, HDMI and an USB input, which means that in addition to the cabling via the MacBook Pro's 3.5mm jack output, I have four other options for transmitting the signal to the preamplifier.

Which of these (in total five) ways offers the best audio quality?

I'm also interested in how the audio output works via the MacBook Pro's USB ports - which signal is transmitted there? Digital, analog or both? By the way, I ask myself the same question with the iPhone (15 Pro).

I hope I'm not boring anyone with these questions and maybe someone can explain the technical aspects to me.

It depends somewhat on your specific preamp, but in general, USB will deliver the best and most reliable feed. WiFi and HDMI would probably also be OK, but unless there was no other choice you'd want to avoid Bluetooth; that won't give you the best signal for audio. You may want to ask the maker of your preamp if they have specific recommendations.

USB is always going to be digital (as will any other connection other than the 3.5mm audio jack).

Regards.
