After paying my annual DuoLingo subscription, a few days later I wanted to add just the extra for DuoLingo family plan but instead I was charged the entire annual fee again as well as the extra for family plan . I did not expect to pay double, is there anything that can be done about this?

When you upgrade to the Family Plan you get charged for the full plan. There is no partial charge for it.
You may be able to request a refund for the unused portion of the regular non-family plan though.
