I have a 500Mb download service from Zen and use Nordvpn on all devices, resulting in a minor reduction in download speed to approx 490Mb wired and between 300 and 400Mb wireless. However, as soon as the VPN is switched on my iPad, the download speed drops from approx 300Mb to approx 35 Mb., Only this Apple device appears to be throttled. I have tried different VPN locations, but the iPad is still throttled. Any solutions?
Be aware that your 500Mb service is the link speed between you and your ISP - and does not represent the achievable speed between you and the eventual target service.
Typically, protocol overheads will reduce your headline network throughput by ~10% - although this will vary by the chosen VPN protocol and service. Traffic routing, over which you have little (if any) control can also impact available throughput.
Presumably you are using a commercial VPN provider. If so, your maximum network throughput will effectively be determined by the VPN Gateway through which your network traffic is directed.
