MacBook Air 2018 Space bar double spacing and random spaces

MacBook Air 2018 has suddenly started double-spacing with space bar; random spaces are inserted within words without spacebar initiation. I spend more time going back fixing the inserted spaces than actually composing a document.

I have adjusted the Key Repeat Speed to 1 to 2 ticks below fast and Delay Until Repeat to middle setting. Neither has fixed the issue. I didn't fix the spaces in this paragraph...help!

unable to edit in pages. Space bar suddenly stops spacing, and curser jumps to different location In pages, I keep ending up fighting with a "yellow" box around the document, and I can't edit a document if I walk away from it for a few moments. This also happens in mail drafts and sometimes just in google search bar...my words string together, it appears the space bar is not working. then, my curser keeps jumping to another location. this is a MacBook Pro (14-inch, 2021) running Monteray 12.6.7.
