Apple sends that when you try to use more iCloud storage than you have, and the operation fails.

The onus is on you to stop trying to use more storage than you’ve subscribed.

That can mean disabling the iCloud backups or use of iCloud mail or iCloud Messages or whatever else, or purchasing more storage.

Or configure your mailer to delete the warning messages on arrival, and ignore the problem until later.

Are you sure it is Apple? There is a massive phishing scam going around where the spammer tells you that you need to buy more iCloud space. It is just a trick to get you to give them your Apple ID and password so they can hold your iPhone for ransom.

Here’s a simple test:

  • Open Settings
  • Do you see your name at the top? If you don’t you aren’t using iCloud
  • If you do see your name tap on it.
  • Tap on iCloud
  • Tap on Storage
  • It will show you everything that is using iCloud storage, and how much each item is using
  • Turn off syncing for any content you don’t want on iCloud.

Its not just the mailer. The notification appears on the device itself. I am not currently backing up to Icloud so I should not be receiving any messages.

iCloud backups are but one (large) user of iCloud Storage, and there are others as was included in the linked article. Mail and Messages were mentioned. Photos and videos can use storage, too.

What gets used where: Settings > Tap your name at the top > iCloud > Saved to iCloud

As a longer-term alternative to what is clearly frustrating, may I suggest replacing your iPhone with a feature phone, as that might be better suited to your situation and no-hosted-storage preferences? Because an iPhone is always going to want to use some and offer to use iCloud storage. Not much, but some storage. Or lots of storage, depending on the configuration and needs.

I have Icloud backup disabled. Check your facts before answering. I STILL get the notifications. READING is your friend.

READ AGAIN:

But you are using STILL using iCloud, probably in mail, photos and other synch services, irrelevant of whether you are backing up or not. You don't have to do that. Turn off iCloud COMPLETELY...delete the data from iCloud, and you won't be bothered.

OK, you have backup to iCloud disabled. But have you turned off EVERY switch in iCloud so you are NOT syncing ANY data with iCloud. If no, then you'll continue to get these reminders because as you continue to sync data with iCloud, if you are out of memory, your sync won't complete and you get the reminder.

Ok - here is the issue. I had previously paid for the Icloud upgrade through next month. Since they cannot revoke that, the plan stays in place until next month. After that, the data will be deleted and all notifications should stop. During that time I synced photos and other data that put me near the limit. I just simply wanted to stop the notifications but Apple cannot do that if you are using any of their plans. Disabling ALL apps from using iCloud will not stop the notifications if you have time left on your plan. Supposedly the notifications will stop once my plan is inactive per Apple.

I previously used it until the notifications were intrusive. I stopped using it and disabled all apps.
