I'm trying to create a route using Maps on my phone and it's been difficult

Hello all. I have an iPhone SE with the latest upgrade and I'm trying to create a route to save using Maps. The problem is I have to tap on an area on the map to pin it. So if I'm in Iowa and I want to create a route in California, I have to scroll all the way across on my phone and scroll more and expand to find a location. Why can't I use a location that's already in my phone? Why can't I use a search? Or maybe I can and I just don't know how. Can anyone help?

The search option should be at the bottom of the screen. If you can't see it, swipe up. If you still can't see it, check for updates on both your phone IOS and the Maps app.

Try restarting the phone as well.
