How can I fix my Apple TV AirPlay connection?

I've had the same TV, Apple TV setup for 3 years. Two days ago I started getting the error message Unable to Connect to AirPlay Living Room. My phone ios is current, my apple tv firmware is current. I am not getting this error message on a second Apple TV in the bedroom. How do I fix it? Having to unplug the hdmi and power cable everytime I want to watch tv, wait a minute and then plug it back in is not an acceptable "fix"

AirPlay relies on the setup that both devices are on the same home network. Not finding or not connecting to a destination device usually indicates an issue with that home network.

  • Do try restarting the Apple TV box, the router, and any optional other powered network gear. Even if other services seem to stream fine, just to refresh to a good connection.
  • Verify that the phone is not on cellular only, but connects to the home network. Connect to Wi-Fi on your iPhone - Apple Support
  • Do verify that both devices connect to the same SSID network name (in case of Wi-Fi). Some users have different names configured for the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz band. That is not recommended, as that creates two networks, where devices on one segment cannot communicate with devices on the other segment. Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points - Apple Support

Having to unplug the hdmi and power cable …

HDMI doesn’t have influence over this; no need to try that anymore for this issue.

Restarting can refresh a network connection attempt, but the cause of the issue is unlikely to be with the Apple TV box.

The “Unable to Connect to AirPlay ‘Living Room’” error seems to be a recurring issue. Please see the attached screenshot—this occurs only on the Apple TV, but this random error is not seen on the iPhone or iPad. It appears to be related to Apple HomeKit due to the default “Living Room” attribute. On the Apple TV, there is no way to disable HomeKit without turning off AirPlay. I am going to test changing the name of the HomeKit attribute to see if that resolves the random error.

I am also getting the exact same issue. Sometimes that error pops up a few times and then a minute or two later the Apple TV reboots itself and the problem goes away until the next morning when I have to go through the ritual of dismissing the errors and then rebooting the device. Only started happening about 2 weeks ago and I’ve had my Apple TV 4K for several years with no issues

I have rebooted everything. I only have one network and all devices are on that network. Wi-fi is enabled on my phone and automatically connects to my home network. I have made sure the operating systems for all devices are updated. I still get the AirPlay error. I can dismiss the error and when I go to my phone to see if can stream to AppleTv, there is no problem. So not sure why the error message still pops up.

At this time, I would suggest to contact an expert from the Apple Support staff for further assistance. Contact Apple for support and service (phone numbers) or start your support request online (chat/email/callback).
