I have ocd and am a bit of a perfectionist. The top left corner is showing the last used app and it’s driving me crazy. How do I get that to go away completely? I’ve tried clicking the arrow to take me back to the last used app then closing that app. On return to the new app it comes back. I hate it.

Just go back to the Home screen before opening another app. If you ignore it and close the app you were just using by going to the Home screen it will disappear.
Than means that you went from the Mail app directly to another app without going back to the Home screen first. It is most common when you click on a link in Mail that opens Safari or another browser, but it can happen any time a link in one app opens a different app. Tapping on it will return you to the app you just came from, in this case Mail. I use that all the time when I respond to a notification of a new post in a thread I am following, then want to go back to Mail.
This is a picture I took from another discussion that was asking if the last used app showed up because of how long it was used. In their case it was mail and in my case it was my contact list. It’s stopped now but earlier no matter how many times I tried to close it out it would pop up no matter what app I went into.
Ok that helps but how can I get it to go away? Like I don’t want the option to go back to mail to be up there when I’m in another app. And what I did in the past was to close out all apps and then go to the one I want to use and then the mail app or whatever was the last used app will still be in the top left corner. For example I was taking a telephone call and I noticed the top left corner was showing my last used app. I then proceeded to close the app and return to my phone call and lo and behold the top left corner was still showing my last used app. Maybe it can’t go away as long as I’m on the phone?
I’ve never seen that; the top left corner on my iPhone 16 shows the time. If there is an app currently running the time will have a colored background. Is that what you mean? Very few apps actually run when they are not visible; Maps is one, and some streaming apps.
