My mums iPhone 14 has suddenly asked for the passcode on startup which she hasn’t used before- we switched the 6 digit code off so she could just switch the phone on and use it. She can’t access the phone - any ideas?? Also I can’t open her Apple ID account on her iPad with her password🤷♀️🤷♀️ so at the moment I’m requesting a password reset before ( if I have to) perform a reset

At some point a passcode was used to set up the phone. If it is unknown, the phone will have to be erased, then [hopefully] set up from the most recent backup if one exists. If one doesn't exist, the data on the phone will be gone.

Sorry, but the time to ensure no loss of data is before something goes wrong. You will have to use the directions in the link I provided to get back in the phone. When you erase the phone, if a backup exists, you'll be offered the opportunity to restore the backup to the phone. At this point, you really don't have a choice.
