Unpairing a malfunctioning Apple Watch—making sure a full backup is created when unpairing

My Apple Watch disconnects from my iPhone shortly after connection, consistently. The next step is to unpair it. I've read the the watch will automatically create a backup to the iPhone/iCloud when unpairing, but what if the watch loses connection during the backup? Will it unpair without backing up?
