I have downloaded Catalina 10.15.1 from the Mac store and placed the .dmg in the Applications folder as instructed. So I get the response "This update requires macOS version 10.15" when I double click the.dmg.
So what should I do now?

If that app is not there or if the upgrade does not start or if you encounter any error, then at this point I would simply start over.

If you find any "Install macOS..." applications in the Applications folder, then delete those, too. Finally, empty the trash and restart the Mac.

It sounds to me like the OP has already downloaded some form of updater, that's why they get the prompt that 10.15 is required. Also why they had to drop the .dmg into the Apps folder manually.

I now have macOSUpdCombo10.rS-NarmO.15.7.dmg.part downloaded. Trying to open it, it replies "There is no application set to open the document “macOSUpdCombo10.rS-NarmO.15.7.dmg.part”."
I also have macOSUpdCombo10.15.7 copy which gives the same reply, and macOSUpdCombo10.15.7 which gives "image not recognised".

Oh, and what should I do about . “part”. ?
Passwords for apple id, icloud and a few others. It seems to be intermittent but rises to a daily annoyance. I've just been refused a passkey by Google for Microsoft Answers too, having just signed in to Google! Irritating!

What passwords are being refused, it appears that Apple has shut down some old iTunes servers.
